Established 2014 in Provincetown, MA
Our Story
Founded in 2014 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Kohi Coffee was built on Quality, Community, and Kindness. They are core values found in our product, our team, and our owners, Ryan Campbell and James DeRosier.
Ryan was and continues to be an architect whose work has ranged from large-scale medical facilities around the world to local hospitality and residential projects, while James was a Human Resource and business executive. Both with roots in the Pacific Northwest, we made moves from New York, Boston, and San Francisco to find a new home in Provincetown. Kohi was born from a desire for change - life in a place we love paired with a passion for coffee that can be enjoyed every day of the year.
With our company roots based in Ptown, we have embodied the spirit of what we believe true hospitality looks like in every community we serve. As a locally owned and operated LGBTQ+ business, we are committed to giving back to the communities who give us so much. Each and every day, we aim to authentically show our true colors - one cup at a time.
Our Name & Logo
Individuality paired with homage are key aspects to what makes Kohi different from the rest. Our name, Kohi, (pronounced Koh-Hee) directly translates to “coffee” in Japanese. Our name pays tribute to the precision and care that is crafted by Japanese coffee culture; ideals we strive to accomplish within our own craft.
The same can be said for our logo, a Ram’s head in an origami style. The Ram represents the Ethiopian legend of Kaldi, where it is said that he discovered coffee after witnessing his goats eating berries from a certain tree. The goats became so vibrant with energy, they would not sleep that night. Kaldi relayed his findings to a nearby monastery, who then found that the same berries made into a drink allowed them to stay awake for their evening’s prayer. Word spread quickly from there, soon reaching the Arabian Peninsula, where coffee as we know it today began its global journey. Our name and logo serve to honor the traditions and origins of the coffee we serve today.
Our Coffee
With the help of our friends at Tandem Coffee Roasters, we offer a unique selection of organic, fair trade, and single origin coffees. We also have a curated guest roaster program featuring a periodic and rotating selection of some of the best coffees available - because a good cup of coffee is best enjoyed with even better company.
Like a fine wine, there are many flavors and notes that shine through every sip of a quality cup of coffee. Alongside Tandem, we have created the delicious Race Point Espresso blend that is used on bar throughout our cafes. Or, you might try our signature house brew, KoHi Standard; a seasonally changing single origin ethically sourced and quality roasted in collaboration with Tandem.
In addition to our coffee, Kohi collaborates with local artists to give meaning to our merchandise and support our community. But don’t just take our word for it, see them yourself at any of our locations or by visiting our online shop.
